November Walk to School Campaign Begins Friday

The month of November is walk to school month! Children are encouraged to walk to and from school each day. In the classroom, there is a poster that can be filled in when they arrive to record each time they walk and how far they walked. Even if you drive part of the way and walk the rest, this still counts. So encourage your children to walk to school.

Making a Solar Oven

The children are in the process of making a solar oven as part of their homework. They need to bring in their completed and tested (weather permitting) solar oven to school by (or before) 31st October where we will test them outside on a sunny day.

To help, here is a YouTube video which demonstrates how to make and use a solar oven.

Heat on the move...

Today the 3/4F students observed some demonstrations of heat moving in three different ways, through conduction, radiation (radiant heat) and convection. At the end the children were even able to test the movement of heat from their hands to chocolate. I'll let them explain that one! Yum! Here are some photos.

Melting butter on metal - conduction.

Candle moving a spiral - convection

Heat radiating from a lamp - radiation.

Nude Food Day Results

Thanks to all the amazing little environmentalists in our class that supported Nude Food Day on Wednesday. It was very successful. We measured the waste we brought into school on the 11th of October (last week) and then again on the 16th October (Nude Food Day) and found that we had reduced the amount of wrappers etc. by 24 (or 82%). Well done. I hope that has inspired you to prepare healthy lunches with produce that doesn't need extra packaging and use lunch boxes that have compartments.

National Nude Food Day 2013 - Wednesday 16th October

Wednesday 16th October is National Nude Food Day and our school is taking part in an effort to raise awareness and reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill. Please ensure that you child's lunch has no wrappers. Perhaps your child could even help prepare their lunch if they do not already. Our class Environmentalists conducted a surprise audit of wrappers contained in student's lunchboxes on Friday and they will complete another audit on Wednesday to compare the amount. Hopefully we see a dramatic drop. Thanks for helping the environment!

What's on this week...? (Term 4, week 2)

This week we continue our maths focus on place value and number. In literacy, we continue looking at sentence types and will begin looking at information reports. We will also focus on drama in our literacy rotations. As a part of our topic, we take a look at heat sources and ask how is heat produced and can it be measured? We will also be working with our buddy class (1/2L) to dig up some of the winter veges from our vege plot as well as plant some garden space outside the portables. We will finish off the week with some science - should be a fun week.

What's on this week...? (Term 4, week 1)

Welcome back 3/4F families. I hope you all had a wonderful and restful break and are ready for the last term of the year (already!!!!). In the first two weeks of term we will focus on number and place value in Maths. In English we will focus on handwriting through recounting the holidays. We begin our new Integrated topics called 'The Heat is on' and 'Fabulous Forces'. We start with 'The Heat is On' where the students observe heat and begin to develop an understanding of energy flows through simple systems. Children will receive homework on the first Friday of week 1. Finally, please remember that in term 4 all students need to wear hats at school. No hat means no play! This is a big term with lots on, so let's get into it! I look forward to seeing you all back at school on Monday morning...
